Research Profile
In the area of Second Language Education, I am particularly interested in language teaching methodology and teacher education. I focus on classroom practice of good pedagogies: linguistic and cultural literacy; curriculum and materials development: and language policy in second language education. Although most of my work is centred on teaching English in Quebec, I am also interested in second language education in a wide variety of global contexts. A special area of interest is the teaching of English to English-Creole speaking students.

In the area of Creole Studies, I have focused on the historical development of the English and English Creole of Trinidad & Tobago. The publication of my Dictionary of the English/Creole of Trinidad & Tobago in early 2009, is a kind of umbrella for much of my work on historical texts, including literature and recordings. Current projects are “Vernacular plant names in T&T: Recognising indigenous flora” (with Yasmin Baksh-Comeau, Director of the Herbarium, T&T); and Voices of Creole Protest: Penny Cuts and Suzy & Sambo, a book of side-by-side original and translated vernacular texts, with notes on linguistic and historical features. In conjunction with the Hip-Hop Project (with Mela Sarkar and Bronwen Low), I am working on multilingual lyrics in Canadian rap.
